Oughtonhead Common Walk and Map

Oughtonhead Common is a Local Nature Reserve to the west of Hitchin that sits on the River Oughton. It’s a lovely place to walk with a variety of footpaths, sitting places and habitats for the wildlife.

Oughtonhead Common walk 1
1.5 miles

This first route option is the recommended 'Commons Walk' around the pretty Oughtonhead Common. It's a nice short stroll with sections of pretty open grassland teeming with wildlife and a section of walking alongside the River Oughton. There is also an optional short there-and-back detour to a man made waterfall.

2.25 miles

This second route option is basically the same as the first route, enjoying the Oughtonhead Common and River Oughton stroll. However, this option also adds some woodland walking variety with an additional stretch of walking through the Oughtonhead Nature Reserve along the river.

Oughtonhead Common walk 3
3.25 miles

This final route option is a slightly longer walk for those of you with a bit more time for your walk. Like the other two routes, it enjoys the Oughtonhead Common Grasslands, the River Oughton waterside walk with it's waterfall and the woodland of the Outghonhead Nature Reserve. However, this route also heads out to the south of the common for a section of rambling through arable farmland, offering some fresh air and peaceful walking into the mix.
